Betwixed

Responding to the Rutherston Loan Scheme, I took inspiration from Nomads Bou Silad by Harry Stevens to explore how we connect intellectually and physically to art.

The work spans two spaces: an interactive installation at Manchester College and a wall-based piece at Manchester Art Gallery.

Drawing on Stevens’ depiction of the Tuareg, I used fabric to explore strength and impermanence. Intricate Miura folds give the material a sense of movement and adaptability, reflecting the nomadic life that inspired the work.

Making Betwixed also challenged my own perspective. Working against the fabric’s natural form became a negotiation between the material and the structure I wanted to create.

The installations invite audiences to consider how traditional forms can be reinterpreted in contemporary spaces, connecting us through art, time and all that lies between.
